Pax Draconis RPG Overview
Answers to common questions
about the Pax Draconis
role-playing game book.
Q: What is an RPG?
The Pax Draconis book provides a more detailed description, but in simple terms an RPG is a game played in the imaginations of the players, who take on the roles of fictional characters. Think of it like an improv performance: the actors all have characters and situations pre-defined, but no script to dictate what they do. The Gamemaster plays a special role, acting out characters not controlled by players, describing the scenery and generally designing the conflicts that will engage the player's characters.
Whle this could be done entirely in the imaginations of the players, most people prefer to have rules that define how things work and dice that provide an unpredictable element. A player might roll to see if his character can jump a chasm, shoot his enemy, cause fatal damage, or persuade someone to help him.
Q: What does the RPG include?
Pax Draconis: the RPG includes everything necessary for play. This includes: setting and history information, character creation, skills and tests, combat, vehicles, computers, and savants.
We also include record sheets for characters, computer systems and vehicles, and a lengthy index helps you find what you need quickly. For more information see the Pax Draconis RPG product page.
Q: What is the book like?
The book is softcover, perfect-bound and printed with a full-color cover (much like games from Palladium). It is in an 8.5" by 11" format, with 300 pages and approximately 250 illustrations. The suggested retail price is $29.99 and it can be ordered online or at your favorite gaming store. You can download a sample selection of interior pages.
Q: Do I need to buy anything else to play?
No. The basic RPG book contains all the information needed to play. Future supplements will simply add to what has already been defined.
Players will need paper, pencils and polyhedral dice to play. Experienced players may be pleased to know that most dice rolls require only a d6 or d100, making it possible to play with only three dice! These dice are available at many local hobby stores or online.
Q: Is this a computer game?
No. Pax Draconis comes in a book format and does not currently require any use of computers whatsoever. It is not like Baldur's Gate or Final Fantasy style RPGs. It doesn't require the use of the Internet either, unlike MMORPGs or sim-format games.
Q: What rule system is being used?
We have developed our own rule system for Pax Draconis in the belief that rules are an integral part of defining the setting of a game. The rules emphasize role-playing and flexibility with strong tactical elements. We want realism and detail, but not at the expense of game-play. New players can pick up the rules in just a few minutes, but experienced players will find all the support they want for long-term play.
In terms of dice, we use a d100 system for almost all rolls. In fact, players can get away with nothing more than a d100 and a d6!
The best way to learn the system is to use it. Try downloading our Quick Start Guide, which summarizes the key rules in six pages. There are also downloadable scenarios and pre-generated characters that work with the guide in our Players Resources section.
Q: Where can I get more questions answered?
You should start by posting on our Assistance Forum, so that other players or the game's designers can assist you. If this fails, you can E-mail the game's creator directly, but we prefer to answer everything publicly so that other players can benefit from the questions.
As we get more questions from people about rules, we will add additional FAQs to cover them.
Q: Are there other online resources?
Yes. You can try the Players' Resources area of this website for characters, computers, vehicles and scenarios that have been pre-generated and are distributed for free use in groups at home. Also, there are links to other Pax Draconis sites maintained by third parties.
